“Because of SNAP, I can stay in my home.”

HOW SNAP HELPS 102-YEAR-OLD VIRGIL STAY INDEPENDENT
At 102 years old, Virgil is still living in the small North Spokane home he loves. His daughter Carol promised him years ago that she would do everything she could to keep him there. For a long time, she managed it on her own. She would drive from Spokane Valley to North Spokane, lift his wheelchair into her SUV, get him in and out of the car, handled his grocery shopping, managed repairs, and kept his household running. She never complained, because he had once done the same for her.

But as Virgil’s mobility changed and Carol’s own health needs grew, the burden became nearly impossible. She had lost her husband, her best friend, and her mother. She had no one else to call for backup. When she became seriously ill with the flu, she reached a breaking point. Her greatest fear was not her own recovery, but that her father would miss the medical care he depended on.
It was during that moment of crisis that someone told her about SNAP.
SNAP’s Resource Rides program connected Virgil to safe, reliable, wheelchair-accessible transportation. A trained driver now meets him at his door, helps him into the van, and gets him to his medical appointments with care and dignity. Carol can now meet him directly at the clinic instead of risking injury trying to get him there herself.
For Virgil, SNAP’s help is more than a ride. It’s independence. It’s dignity. It’s the ability to stay in the home where he raised his family and built a lifetime of memories. For Carol, it’s relief. It’s the knowledge that she is not alone. It’s the support system she searched for and could not find anywhere else.
Virgil often says, “Because of SNAP, I can stay in my home.”
Stories like his are possible because of people who give generously. As more seniors in Spokane County work to remain safe in their homes, donor support ensures SNAP can meet that growing need with compassion and care.
